Jun 23rd, 2009 by intel4htechwizards

Intel 4-H Tech Wizards prepares student leaders every summer during six weeks of training, better known as summer capstone programs. This year’s theme is

“Healthy Heart, Healthy Hand 2.0.”

There are 3 capstone programs involving more than 50 students:

GIS/GPS (July 21st- August 14th)

Web 2.0 (July 27th- August 14th)

Leadership (July 20th-31st)

Lego Robotics(TBA)

GIS/GPS group will map the bike paths of a certain area of the city of Hillsboro heavily populate with Hispanics/Latinos. The purpose of the project is to show the bike paths and parks near by where people can exercise and walk freely.  This map will show the different safety routes and

Web 2.0 group will interview health officials and bicycle enthusiasts about the importance of bicycling and healthy living. Furthermore part of the project includes using mobile Internet access (wimax see clear.com) to do  live podcasting and vidcasting from different sections  of the designated  field of work.  The students will make use of tools such as youtube.com, livecast.com, and Google earth pro to export their work.  Furthermore, the website: http://www.4hwizardspace.org/ has been created to serve as a repository for content.

The leadership group will conduct research and coordinate the public display of the projects in places like the Cultural Center or the Public Library in Cornelius, Forest Grove or Hillsboro. Furthermore, the leadership group will engage in social norms marketing changing the perception of bicycle use in the chicano/latino/community.

In various Latin-American countries bicycling is considered is an everyday transportation much needed given their economic capabilities, however, within recent immigrants bike riding equals poverty.  See discussion: http://www.cyclelicio.us/2008/03/immigrant-laborers-on-bicycles.html

The idea is to change perception and to spread information about healthy living one step at a time.

Topics covered by the leadership group will include:

Number of Bicycle accidents in the area

Number of resources for bicycling in the area

Places to buy donate or obtain bikes at convenient prices.
