4-H Mashup Ideas
There has been a great deal of brainstorming about what a 4-H mashup site could be. In addition to the Tech Wizards, Chester at OSU, Sarah in Bend, and Josh at Mizzou, have made HUGE contributions and here is where we are do date:
A fluid, user generated site that allows for storage and social networking. We need to incorporate dynamic features such as discussion groups, chats, online data creation and storage, Podcasting, blogs, etc. – We need a youth-friendly location with those features for Tech Wizards to utilize appropriately and to learn about them as powerful tools for communication, business, education, etc.Ideas to incorporate:· Make it a social networking site (first and foremost)· Incorporating:o Ability to generate web content (own site or sub-site) and this could be posted to the general pubic or just to the social network; giving the user the ability to choose who can view their page(s).o Blogso Chatso IM –§ with features including setting your status, picking friends, choosing how you are displayed to friends, and ability to block friends,o VoIP for collaboration , o Video feeds for face to face collaboration,
o “intercompany email”, regular email,
o A place to post/share videos and files and the ability to choose who can view these pages/files,o RSS Feeds (maybe the ability to produce as well as view a custom string of RSS feeds.),o a storage site (we called it a dump) where you can store all kinds of documents that one might want to access from more than one place (virtual hard drive),o applications that could open ANY of the normal documents (so if I uploaded a word doc from my home computer….an online app could open it, and I could edit it on the fly and save/print from any location); (file formats that would be the focus: .doc/.txt/.rtf, .xls/other spreadsheet formats, .ppt?/,ppv?, and .pub,o all apps work interchangeably within the zone§ Applications such as: (These are examples only)§ A place to create and collaborate on text documents - http://writeboard.com§ Storage: yahoo briefcase or http://www.mediamax.com/ § Chat or discussions - http://cofer.campfirenow.com/§ Online Applications such as those found at http://zoho.com/§ Blogging - Wordpress - http://wordpress.com/ or http://www2.blogger.com/home In the future: We can teach how to build a home page that has the capability for RSS feed for Podcasts, has a chat, discussion group, and IM feature for not only social networking but also for decision making, has the ability to do online resume building. Here is the brainstorm for the mission/outline statement: A collaborative effort to design an environment where youth can explore…, practice existing skills and utilize emerging technologies; while promoting the development of new skills that they will use in the corporate workplace. Ideas that we want to incorporate:
- Community service learning/projects
- Making a difference in our world/using the tools that we need to prepare for the workforce.
If others have ideas - we would love to hear them!
